Hospice Care volunteers are specially-trained individuals with a heart for terminally-ill patients and their family members. These volunteers are an invaluable and essential part of the interdisciplinary team, and we are always looking for compassionate people to becoming volunteers!
Our program is broken down into several sub-programs to best meet the needs of the patients, families, and staff of Hospice Care.
| Volunteer Opportunities include: |
Patient Services volunteers work with our interdisciplinary team to help provide emotional support for the patients and families on our service. These volunteers make friendly visits patients in their homes and in skilled nursing facilities, and participate in a variety of activities to help support patients in the end stages of life and their loved ones. |
Life Stories volunteers work as part of the patient services volunteer team to provide socialization for patients and their families. More specifically, these volunteers chronicle the life stories of patients in the end stages of life to provide a physical record to the patients’ families. |
Bereavement volunteers work with our Bereavement Coordinator to help care for the families our patients have left behind. These volunteers make care calls to families to initiate and maintain contact, assist the Bereavement Coordinator in mailing newsletters, and help the Bereavement Coordinator and Volunteer Coordinator plan and prepare bereavement events. |
Arts and Crafts volunteers are invited to participate in our monthly crafters’ nights, to work from home in making gifts of love for patients, or to get involved both ways! |
Office Services volunteers work with our Volunteer Coordinator to help care for the families our patients and families by offering administrative support to our office staff. These volunteers make care calls to patients and families to ensure that they have the supplies needed, assist the Team Coordinators with filing and , and help the Bereavement Coordinator and Volunteer Coordinator plan and prepare bereavement events. |
Community Service and Speakers Bureau volunteers work with our Community Liaisons to spread the word about the hospice benefit. They work closely with the Volunteer Coordinator to recruit other volunteers and to present new information in volunteer meetings. Community Service volunteers have the opportunity to give an explanation of benefits to prospective patients, showing patients and their families how Hospice Care will provide holistic care and assistance in the end stages of life. |

| Volunteer Requirements: |
To volunteer with Hospice Care, the most important thing our volunteers need to possess is a desire to help with care and compassion. Volunteers should be great listeners, have a strong comfort with death and the dying process, and able to document work clearly and concisely. |
There is no age requirement for Arts and Crafts volunteers; Office and Community Service volunteers must be sixteen or older. Bereavement volunteers, Patient Services volunteers, and Life Stories volunteers must be eighteen or older. Interested volunteers must participate in hospice volunteer training, which is tailored to each sub-program, and provides continuing education opportunities monthly. |
